Jericho Cemetery

Early burials – Jericho Cemetery, 1884-1898

The Jericho township was surveyed and a plan submitted to the Surveyor-General on 23 November 1884 by J Vincent S Desgrand. This plan does not include a cemetery. He had, on 20 November presided at an inquest into the death of John/Jack Lynch, a business partner with John Monahan in a hotel, the first being built in the town. Therefore, it seems likely that John Lynch was buried within the area which Vincent Desgrand considered suitable for a cemetery.

The Cemetery Reserve was not proclaimed until August 1897 with a Cemetery Trust established by September. However, several monuments which remain to the present mark earlier burials within the Reserve, the earliest being in April 1886.

The Jericho Cemetery Burial Register, now held by the Barcaldine Regional Council includes a record of burials from 29 December 1899
