Early burials – Alpha Cemetery, 1884-1921

Official burial records of the Alpha Cemetery contain gaps from 1884 until 1922 when the Jericho Shire Council took control. The cemetery had a troubled early history. A Cemetery Trust was given responsibility for control and management of the cemetery reserve in April 1897. When in 1921 the Alpha Progress Association wanted the Jericho Shire Council to take control of the cemetery, the proposal was opposed. If burial records were kept under the Trust’s control (1897-1922), it appears they did not survive. As well, the records of the burials that occurred before the cemetery reserve was gazetted in 1896 no longer exist in an official form.

Notes on the database

The information included in the database has been collected in recent decades. One source was the compilation of Alpha Cemetery – Burials & Monumental Inscriptions by Pat Murphy in 1998. Another a list of deaths in the Clermont District where the burial place was the Alpha cemetery. Many details have been verified through the Queensland Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages, Queensland State Archives inquest and coronial files and from local newspapers .
