A school for Jericho

Extract, 1886 list

Lists of children able to attend a school in Jericho were sent to the Queensland Department of Public Instruction in December 1886 and November 1887. The 1886 list includes the names of some of the parents living near a proposed school, noting the families moving to Barcaldine where the next terminus had opened the previous month.  The 1887 list elicited a more positive response from Departmental officials, with the District Inspector, J Wilham, recommending the establishment of a Provisional School with Mrs O’Loan as teacher. It was opened the next year.

Notes on database

The lists name 114 children, 22 of whom are included on both lists. Forty-six families are represented.

Year: The database includes both 1886 and 1887 lists to show when each pupil is named.

Left: Notes were made on the 1886 list to indicate if the family had left Jericho for the next terminus.

Last School: A number of children were attending the private school established in Jericho with Glanville sisters as teachers.

Parent named on 1886 list: A parent signed the 1886 list and named the children wishing to attend school.

Parents identified: Other parents of a number of the children have been identified, primarily through the records of the Queensland Government Registry of births, deaths marriages and divorces.
